”Just Do It!” says Nike®. And it really is as simple as that. You know why? Because “doing” stuff is where we spend most of our lives. Dreaming and learning to focus is good and all… but if we are going to be efficient and effective at making our dreams come true, then we need to do things. ANYTHING!!! But start. The main killer of dreams is doubt and lack of action, so… take action! Learn from the best engineers that know the real purpose of a prototype is not to get closer to the solution, but to show them which parts of the problem they don’t yet understand. i.e. prototypes break, we scratch our heads and design something better because our prototype broke and made us think. Everything in life is kind of similar, if you live by design, you are sure to find places that break away from your design. You can either choose to get upset and anxious about life not fitting to your mold or take it as an opportunity for learning and growth.
Doing things well and in a way that fosters who you really are takes more than just “wanting” to do these things. It takes experience, education, hard work, persistence, resilience, flexibility, creativity, humility, team work, a positive attitude, a healthy body, a healthy mind, and a healthy spirit. That is a LOT to keep up with as a human being, and hence why we end up receding to our comfort zone more often than not. Because not being prepared for the unexpected loss, pain, suffering, disappointment and failure that comes from not achieving our goals exactly when or how we want to, is what usually leads to us not risking anything in the first place.
So, I believe that you plan for the best and prepare for the worst… that simple. Assume that this world is a place where everybody is scared to exit the cave, to see the light and then to never see it again. Doing things with the time we have requires us to find a link between the real time we have to achieve things and the grand scale of our dreams within. To do this, we must focus our time on honing some skills. Those that will make us more versatile, useful to others that will inevitably need our aid and most importantly focus on those skills that will make our future “self” more prepared for the tasks at hand.
I found that martial arts really helped me when I was a kid. The notion that was seared into my psyche about the balance between body, mind and spirit will forever be a cornerstone of how I see life. From this perspective, we need to focus on dedicating time to ensuring our body is healthy, our mind is focused and that our spirit is free. I’ll expand on this subject in future posts, since I am a true believer that everyone should learn martial arts at some point in their life.
When it comes to doing things, I don’t think there is a better book to suggest than “The Power of NOW – by Eckhart Tolle”. It is a book full of sobering yet empowering truths about ourselves. This day and age, it is really hard for people to distinguish between religion and spirituality. I will not speak of religion, but I will speak of spirit. The one guide that you will entrust with your safety, happiness and overall wellbeing. That tiny light within you. It is only up to you to define it, protect it and make it shine against all possible adversity from the world so that you may focus every moment on what really matters to you and what will advance your life’s true mission.
Till next time! Keep the dreams big, the focus sharp and the body moving!
